THE LEGACY
Late in 1887 Robert Lockhart surprised his close friend and New York business associate John Reid with golf clubs he had brought back from Scotland. After being arrested for hitting balls in Central Park, they laid out a crude six-hole course in an abandoned apple orchard on a Yonkers meadow.

When a break in the winter weather came on February 22, 1888, Reid and Lockhart gathered four of their friends to play the first organized round of golf in this country.
